I knew I wanted to continue my studies after university and aspired to become a chartered marketer, therefore I decided to complete the Professional Diploma in Marketing with the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).

It was a challenge having a full-time job and studying at the same time, but I learned so much from the experience. It was more than just a course, as I learned valuable insights from the experience of the tutor and my peers. This led to me being much more curious and innovative with my marketing approach and inspired my passion for making marketing measurable.

A few years later I joined a US-based multi-national healthcare organisation in an international marketing role, which was then acquired by well-known global corporation 3M – a company known for investing in marketing talent – and it was not long before I was completing the Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing. By this time, I was already a certified chartered marketer and very dedicated to my continued professional development, so it was a natural progression.

This time I opted for distance learning with the Oxford College of Marketing (OXCOM) which involved intensive weekends and support from a tutor. The online resources provided by both OXCOM and CIM were comprehensive, and really helped me deepen my understanding.

I achieved the highest mark globally in the Analysis and Decision (A&D) module – the only ‘A’ grade achieved in that exam board, for which I received the prestigious “Top Student” Award from the CIM. This was really the pinnacle moment in my CIM journey as everything I had learned in my studies and career really came together and I knew that the hard work had paid off. And as someone who prefers vocational course work to time pressured exams, this was an extra special achievement.

So, what’s next? Well, I am planning to start the teaching CIM students to hopefully pass on my experience to the next generation of marketing leaders. Who knows maybe I will even be back as a student myself one day, after all there is always something new to learn!

As I didn’t go to university, I was nervous that this would restrict me when applying for jobs. However, part way through my CIM qualification, I had the opportunity to apply for a promotion for a marketing executive position.

I personally feel the knowledge gained throughout the course, and the professionalism it allowed me to show, helped me to become the successful candidate.

I have learnt so much from the course and I have been able to integrate this back into my work as both an apprentice and a marketing executive. I have been able to apply learning from the Mastering Metrics module when reporting and evaluating campaigns, which has not only been valuable for myself but also the wider team.

Digital Strategy allowed me to introduce and implement an influencer strategy for the first time at the RNLI. Finally, Strategic Marketing has allowed me to look at marketing in a wider context at the RNLI and as an industry. I am now able to take a step back and evaluate marketing as a whole rather than working through specifics.

I feel that my course has truly been invaluable to my career progression and would consider the Marketing Leadership Programme course in the future. As well as this, the support OXCOM provided, guided me through the course and I would recommend the evening courses to help understand further!

My undergraduate degree was in Sport and Recreation Management so studying for professional qualifications has been a brilliant way of upskilling myself and providing knowledge of effective high-level strategic marketing.  Working in a higher education institution, industry recognised qualifications for professional staff do help to provide an increased level of credibility in what can traditionally be a very academic influenced organisation.
